Pediatric Nurse Certification Board Exam PNCB

Studying for the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB) Exam
While it's normal to fear taking the PNCB Exam, the key is not to panic and to remember you have been taking and passing exams all through school to get to this point in your career. Following are some suggestions that will help you prepare.

Allow Enough Time to Prepare Properly
Give yourself at least six – eight weeks to study. Create a schedule of topics you will study each day and stick to your schedule. This will prevent you from, focusing on the more familiar material first and having to cram the material you are less familiar with as the exam gets closer. After two hours of study, your retention will start to decline, so plan to only study two hours a day, and be sure to take a break after the first hour.

Create Flash Cards
Creating your own flash cards rather than borrowing those of someone else will help you retain the information, because if you write it on paper yourself, you will be more likely to remember it. Have a spouse or friend use them to quiz you.

Practice Questions and Texts
Purchase a copy of the PNCB practice questions or use the online testing tool on the PNCB website. The cost is $50.00.

To prepare for the primary care exam, recommended texts are:
  • Pediatrics – A Primary Care Approach by Carol D. Berkowitz
  • Pediatric Primary Care by Catherine E. Burns
All others should use:
  • Pediatric Hospital Medicine by Ronald M. Perkins
Study Groups
Study groups with peers offer opportunities to reinforce learning and confidence as you realize you haven't forgotten everything you've learned. Be sure to spend the week before the exam getting plenty of rest, eating properly and staying hydrated. Relax and be confident that you will do well. Good luck!
